Producer
Enrico Teruzzi is a true Tuscan pioneer, being not only one of the first people in the region to install temperature control in his cellar, but also doing much to save Vernaccia from extinction. Admittedly, the legislation was already in place to do so: Vernaccia di San Gimignano was the first DOC to be created, in 1966, eight years before Enrico’s arrival. Nonetheless, his determination has ensured that this most characterful of Tuscany’s indigenous white varieties is more than a legal curiosity. San Gimignano, close to the Chianti zone, also has a growing reputation for Sangiovese.
Vineyard
The wine takes its name from the soil in which the vines grow: tufo, a volcanic soil mixed, in this case, with limestone. The vineyards are situated 150-250 metres above sea level and enjoy a range of aspects.
Winery
Soft pressing of the grapes and cleaning of the must was followed by a temperature controlled fermentation in barriques. The wine spent a short time on its lees, before a four to five month ageing period in French oak (thirty percent new).
