Producer
The name RAR not only makes reference to winemaker Ricard Rofé’s (of Scala Dei fame) initials but also means “rare” in Catalan. The rarity here lies in his approach, which avoids the heavily oaked and extracted style of wines common to Priorat, in favour of a more elegant, fresh and fruit-driven expression.
Vineyard
The grapes come from 30 to 90 year-old vines planted at 500 to 700 metres above sea level, on the region’s unique llicorella soils. The grapes were harvested by hand, between the15th September and the 15th October, at a maximum yield of 3,600 kg per hectare.
Winery
Fermentation took place in stainless steel and cement vats with 15-20% stalks added back and twelve to eighteen days on the skins. Malolactic fermentation also took place in vat, followed by four to five months’ ageing in 500 litre oak barrels which were less than two years old.
